Family files wrongful death suit against Texas hospital

A family is taking legal action against a Jefferson County hospital and rehabilitation center claiming that their loved one lost his life due to the hospital's negligence. The man suffered from pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores, that contributed to the sepsis that resulted in his death. The Texas family is seeking unspecified damages in the wrongful death suit.

The man was admitted to the hospital on Sept. 11, 2012 after suffering from a stroke. However, during his stay at the hospital, he began to develop pressure ulcers, which are skin conditions created when a person puts pressure on a certain part of their body for too long. Unfortunately, the pressure ulcers were not properly treated, according to the suit, and by the time the man was transferred to a rehabilitation facility, the sores had progressed to a severe state.

The man had to be hospitalized at the same hospital as before to receive treatment for the ulcers, and on Nov. 12, 2012, he was readmitted to the same rehabilitation center. The family alleges that the pressure ulcers continued to worsen and that the medical staff failed to properly treat them. Ultimately, the pressure ulcers worsened to the point where they contributed to sepsis, which caused the man to pass away on Jan. 10, 2013.

The loss of a loved one is always difficult. However, if a Texas resident has lost a loved one due to the negligence of a third party, then that individual may be able to pursue wrongful death litigation. While the litigation will not bring the loved one back, a successfully handled claim can bring peace of mind to the surviving family as well as possibly result in a monetary award for the damages sustained.
